One of our favorite things about January (alongside the fact that it’s a new year) is the beautiful birthstone, Garnet. This magnificent gemstone has been adorned for centuries by the likes of Egyptian Pharaohs and even the Romans. What makes this gem so unique? Here are some fun facts:
- The origin of the name garnet is derived from the Greek word “granatum,” which means “pomegranate seed.” This is reflected the shape and color of the crystals.
- Garnet is the official state mineral of Connecticut (yes, you read that right!). While not every state has a state mineral, particular states with significant mineral deposits have created official state mineral/rock/stone/gemstones.
- Garnet has long been considered an important stone for healing purposes. In ancient times, Garnets were worn to enhance bodily strength, endurance and vigor. The gem was also thought to relieve skin conditions and regulate the heart and blood.
Alongside these fun facts, it’s even said that garnet gifts offer loyalty and affection upon the bestowed. Now, whether or not that is true, a gift of garnet jewelry will always be loved and appreciated, especially by those celebrating a January birthday.
Happy Birthday to January Babies!
